Grades matter, and this is where a cheap container gets expensive. Cargo-worthy is the grade we check wind and watertight before it leaves the depot. As-is units are cheaper again and are not sold watertight — they may carry a patched repair, a soft spot in the floor or a door seal that no longer seats, and we will tell you exactly what is wrong with one before you buy it. New single-trip units are sealed and unmarked. If a container has to keep rain off what is inside it, buy cargo-worthy or better.
Around Brisbane it is mostly site storage on the estates going up at Ripley, Yarrabilba and North Lakes, lockable trade storage across the industrial belts at Rocklea, Wacol, Geebung and Northgate, household storage during the renovation of an inner-north Queenslander, gear storage for the trades working the CBD towers, and shell units for fitout businesses in the Darra and Coopers Plains workshops.
If you are shopping around, Brisbane is the fairest place to test a price. The containers are sitting at port-side depots rather than being trucked in from another state, stock depth is good in every size, and the cartage to a suburban address is a short run. That means the published container price is doing most of the work in the total, and the delivery is not quietly doubling it.
It also means the gaps between grades are clean and easy to read. A used cargo-worthy 20ft starts at $2,200 ex GST and a new single-trip 20ft starts at $3,300. That $1,100 is the real cost of unmarked steel, and in Brisbane it is not muddied by a long freight leg on top of both.
Containers come off whichever depot is holding your size in your grade. Around Brisbane that is normally two to five business days from confirming an order, and it can be quicker on a common 20ft cargo-worthy.
The date moves when you want something less common — a 10ft, a high cube in a specific colour, or a new single-trip when the last vessel has cleared. It also moves after heavy rain, because the ground you want it placed on stops carrying a loaded truck long before the road does. If your date is fixed, say so when you enquire and we will work backwards from it rather than quoting an optimistic number.
Brisbane metro is about as short as a delivery run gets in this country, because the depots are here rather than a state away. What still moves the number is the address itself — a flat industrial site twenty minutes from the depot is a different job to a residential street on the far side of the city with a bit of manoeuvring involved. We quote it with the container, against your address, rather than publishing a figure that would be wrong for half the city.
A crane truck for tight inner-city access costs more than a tilt-tray, and a 40ft costs more than a 20ft over the same distance. We quote the container and the delivery together before anything is booked, so there is one number to say yes or no to.
Brisbane is two delivery problems in one city. The industrial belts and the outer growth corridors — Wacol, Berrinba, Ripley, North Lakes, Redland Bay — are about as easy as delivery gets: wide entries, level hardstand, room to line a truck up and swing it. The inner ring is the opposite, and it is worth thinking about before you order. Paddington, Bardon, Red Hill, Woolloongabba, New Farm and most of the inner north are steep, narrow-fronted and full of high-set Queenslanders on small blocks with a single-width drive down one side, established figs and jacarandas over the road, and low-strung services on timber poles. A tilt-tray that fits down the street still has to get its bed up on the angle to slide a container off, and it needs the length to do it. Where that is not there, the answer is a crane truck, which costs more and works.
